XMM-Newton observations of the supernova remnant IC 443: II. evidence of stellar ejecta in the inner regions

چکیده
Aims. We investigate the spatial distribution of the physical and chemical properties of the hot X-ray emitting plasma of the supernova remnant IC 443, in order to get important constraints on its ionization stage, on the progenitor supernova explosion, on the age of the remnant, and its physical association with a close pulsar wind nebula. Methods. We present XMM-Newton images of IC 443, median photon energy map, silicon and sulfur equivalent width maps, and a spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of homogeneous regions. Results. The hard X-ray thermal emission (1.4–5.0 keV) of IC 443 displays a centrally-peaked morphology, its brightness peaks being associated with hot (kT>1 keV) X-ray emitting plasma. A ring-shaped structure, characterized by high values of equivalent widths and median photon energy, encloses the PWN. Its hard X-ray emission is spectrally characterized by a collisional ionization equilibrium model, and strong emission lines of Mg, Si, and S, requiring oversolar metal abundances. Dynamically, the location of the ejecta ring suggests an SNR age of ∼4,000 yr. The presence of overionized plasma in the inner regions of IC 443, addressed in previous works, is much less evident in our observations.

Observation of Nonthermal Emission from the Supernova Remnant Ic 443 with Rxte
In this paper we present analysis of X-ray spectra from the supernova remnant IC 443 obtained using the PCA on RXTE. The spectra in the 3 20 keV band are well fit by a two-component model consisting of thermal and nonthermal components. We compare these results with recent results of other X-ray missions and discuss the need for a cut-off in the nonthermal spectrum. Recent Chandra and XMM-Newto...
متن کاملThe plerion nebula in IC 443: the XMM-Newton view
XMM-Newton observations of the X-ray feature 1SAX J0617.1+2221 in the IC 443 supernova remnant are reported. We resolve the structure of the nebula into a compact core with a hard spectrum of photon index γ = 1.63 −0.10 in the 2–10 keV energy range. The nebula also has an extended (∼ 8 × 5) X-ray halo, much larger than the radio emission extension. The photon index softens, following a linear s...
متن کاملXmm-newton Observations of the Supernova Remnant Ic443: I. Soft X-ray Emission from Shocked Interstellar Medium
The shocked interstellar medium around IC443 produces strong X-ray emission in the soft energy band (E . 1.5 keV). We present an analysis of such emission as observed with the EPIC MOS cameras on board the XMM-Newton observatory, with the purpose to find clear signatures of the interactions with the interstellar medium (ISM) in the X-ray band, which may complement results obtained in other wave...
متن کاملCan Ejecta-dominated Supernova Remnants Be Typed from Their X-ray Spectra? the Case of G337.2−0.7
In this paper we use recent X-ray and radio observations of the ejecta-rich Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G337.2−0.7 to determine properties of the supernova (SN) explosion that formed this source. H I absorption measurements from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) constrain the distance to G337.2−0.7 to lie between 2.0 ± 0.5 and 9.3± 0.3 kpc. Combined with a clear radio image of t...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of Sagittarius A East
We present an analysis of a recent XMM-Newton observation of Sgr A East, a supernova remnant located close to the Galactic Centre. Very high quality X-ray spectra reveal many emission lines from highly ionized atoms consistent with a multitemperature thin thermal plasma in ionization equilibrium. We use a two-temperature model to fit the spectra and derive temperatures of 1 keV and 4 keV. There...
